2020, NRP 8th Edition. The NRP Curriculum will consist of 2 parts
Part 1
- The NRP 8th edition has two levels of Providers: Essentials and Advanced.
- The NRP Essentials course (Textbook lessons 1 through 4) is suitable for anyone involved in the care of a newborn. NRP Advanced (Textbook lessons 1 through 11 & a 35 question exam) may be appropriate for those who attend births and are responsible for anticipated resuscitation of the newborn with known risk factors and for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive-pressure ventilation.
- Complete an online evaluation
Part 2
- Complete the in-person skills check off within 90 days of Part 1 course completion.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP®)
The Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP®) is an educational program jointly sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association. The course is designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn to hospital staff who care for newborns at the time of delivery. NRP uses interactive, simulation-based teaching for effective learning.
Who should take NRP?
Hospital staff who care for newborns at the time of delivery, including:
- Labor & Delivery Nurses, NICU Nurses, PICU Nurses & Mother-baby Nurses
- Nurse Midwives & Doulas
- Neonatologists, Emergency Department Physicians & Physician Assistants
- Paramedics, EMTs & Respiratory Therapists
- IBCLC Lactation Consultants
- Other providers of care for newborns.
Course Content
Concepts and skills covered in NRP include:
- Foundations of Neonatal Resuscitation
- Preparation for Resuscitation (new in the 8th edition!)
- Initial Steps of Newborn Care
- Positive-Pressure Ventilation
- Alternative Airways: Endotracheal Tubes and Laryngeal Masks
- Chest Compressions
- Medications
- Post-Resuscitation Care (new in the 8th edition!)
- Resuscitation and Stabilization of Babies Born Preterm
- Special Considerations
- Ethics and Care at the End of Life.
Students who successfully complete the course
will be able to:
- Identify pre-birth risk factors
- Assess full-term and pre-term newborns immediately after birth
- Place a mask on a newborn, and position a newborn's head for positive-pressure ventilation
- Determine when alternative airway use is indicated
- Identify anatomical landmarks in the neonatal airway assess when to use chest compressions
- Administer chest-compressions properly, and identify possible complications
- Administer medications to newborns
- Assess and respond to post-resuscitation medical conditions.
Eight-edition program materials reflect the 2020 American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care of the Neonate.
